A Founderˇ¦s Expectation

Founder and Board Director, Dr. Ju-Chuan Chou, M. D. , Ph.D.

Due to the shortage of dentists in the post war era during the '50s in Taiwan, Dr. Ju-Chuaii Chou founded the institute in 1960 with the purpose of training dentists. This school was named Chung Shan Dental Junior College after Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, alias Cliung-Shan, in recognition of his patriotism. Subsequently, the program for physicians was established upon the request of the public and soon the programs for nurses and medical technologists were also founded. The program on dentistry required four years of studies, medicine five years, nursing and medical technology three years.

The demand for the institute to be elevated to the college level was growing with time. After much effort and program enforcement, the institute was granted the college status by the Ministry of Education in 1977 and the institute was renamed as Chung Shan Medical and Dental College. In 2001, the institute became Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU).

The rapid progress and expansion of the university in the past two decades have been self-evident. In addition to the new buildings, the research accomplishments achieved by the faculty members have won wide recognition. The university is now consisted of six colleges: College of Medicine, College of Oral Medicine, College of Medical Sciences and Technology, College of Health Care and Management, College of Medical Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Nursing. The other graduate programs offering master's degree include Medicine, Nursing, Immunology, Biochemistry & Biotechnology, Nutritional Science, Stomatology, Medical & Molecular Toxicology, Oral Materials Science, Biomedical Science, Public Health, Applied Chemistry.
